There is a very interesting discusion going-on on youtube (first time I see "inteligent use" of this media). It's about how to do to teach Math. concerned parents, math teachers and university profesors each have made a comentary about this issue. Very interesting stuff.

Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth

I remmeber my own math education in the Netherlands. It was always a unordered mish-mash ideas and algorithms. Maybe it was just me, and  I couldn't see the forest from the trees. But maybe not. One of the nice things of doing math in a chilean university was to get "the traditional" aproach to it all. No nonsence, repeat until you drop, kind of training. But it certainly worked for me. I feel much more comfortable with math and numbers in general now. It was really something I needed, I guess.

It is true that the way math is taught in Chile is very much "to the bone". Repeat the exercises over and over again until you master them. It may be also relevant to teach students the thinking patterns being enhanced WHILE they exercise: logic, structured thinking, problem solving.. It can't be all about the numbers, right?
